The suspended view point

This cape was baptized with the name “Cabo Girão” by João Gonçalves Zarco. This point served as reference to the discoverers at the time of the discovery of the island, and during the realization of a small expedition along the south-west coast of the island. To fully understand the word, “Giro” could be translated as “turn point” or “return point“.

Nowadays it is sought after by most of the tourists that visit our island, as it is classified as one of the highest of Europe, with nearly 580 meters from the sea level to the viewpoint.

From the viewpoint it is possible to observe part of the city of Funchal, as well as the city of Câmara de Lobos, from the coast to the mountains.  Looking to the bottom through the glass floor, we can  see the “Fajã do Cabo Girão”, where agriculture thrives.

If you have a fear of heights, “Cabo Girão” can be observed from the sea on three of our trips: “Observation of Cetaceans”, “Sunset“and “Route of the Fajãs”, and during the summer months, it is possible to enjoy a refreshing swim below the cliffs. Irresistible, we know!
